BMW M5 G90 Review

2025 BMW M5 G90 – Has The Super Saloon Been Reinvented?

Is it still an M5 if it’s a plug-in hybrid? Yes. And then some.

The G90 generation BMW M5 is the seventh iteration of the legendary super saloon, and the first ever with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It’s no longer just a big-engined bruiser. It’s now part silent assassin, part autobahn monster, and part tech-laden luxury cruiser.

But don’t panic. Underneath all the electronics and driving modes still lives a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. Add to that an electric motor and you get a ridiculous 727hp and 1,000Nm. That’s supercar-fast but with school-run practicality.

What’s the BMW M5 G90 like to drive?

Surprisingly subtle, until it’s not. In EV mode, the M5 wafts along in an eerie silence for up to 70km, making city driving or early morning getaways entirely stealthy. Perfect for not annoying the neighbours. But bury your right foot and the V8 wakes up with a deep, throaty snarl, aided by the instant shove of the e-motor. 0–100kmh takes just 3.5 seconds, despite a kerb weight of nearly 2.4 tonnes.

The M5 is much heavier than ever, but it’s also more composed than ever. Rear-wheel steering helps it rotate like a much smaller car, and adaptive suspension keeps everything flat and focused. On an Irish backroad it feels precise, not nimble exactly, but confident and shockingly capable.

There’s a clever M xDrive system, too with a switchable rear-wheel-drive mode for when you’re feeling brave (or have a deep budget for tyres).

BMW M5 G90: Interior and tech

Inside, it’s peak BMW. A curved displayiDrive 8.5, and all the M goodies from the carbon fibre trim to the Bowers & Wilkins sound system (optional, but unmissable). Heated and cooled seatsrear blinds, a panoramic sunroof, and enough ambient lighting to make you feel like you’re in a nightclub.

Everything feels solid and beautifully integrated, it’s not really flashy but it’s undeniably a premium product. The digital experience is really slick, but if you’re a button-lover, this isn’t going to work for you..

BMW M5 G90: Is it good or not?

Yes, the new M5 is a hybrid. Yes, it weighs more than a Range Rover Classic. But it still has that M-car magic. It’s faster than ever, smarter than ever, and more versatile than any M5 before it. You can commute in silencecruise in comfort, or terrorise twisty roads – all in one car.

Is it a purists car? Maybe not. But it’s still brilliant.

8.5/10 – A silent weapon. Heavy on weight, heavy on ability. And very, very fast.
